How did Eli Whitney’s invention of the cotton gin affect the cotton industry?

Whitney’s invention made upland short cotton into a profitable crop, which strengthen the economy foundation of slavery in the United States. Despite the social and economic impact of his invention, Whitney lost many profits in legal battles over patent infringement for the cotton gin.

Because of Eli Whitney's invention the production of cotton speeded up the process of removing the seeds from cotton fiber. Also, the cotton gin reduced the number of workers needed to remove the seeds. However, it did increase the number of slaves needed to harvest cotton.
